Some Upcoming Shows Around The Austin Area

We've got a few good shows coming up over the next week or so here in Austin.

Thursday 4/8 - Saturday 4/10
Thursday, the 8th, we'll be checking out our favorite bluegrass (?) band in Austin, the Flatcar Rattlers, at Jovita's from 8p-10p.
If that isn't your thing, you could always check out Lucero and Shooter Jennings at Emo's Thursday.
Friday night, April 9th, the Alt-512 gang will be hitting up The Triple Crown in San Marcos for Mark Jungers' monthly happy show before heading to the Broken Spoke for the rarest-of-the-rare full band show by Chris Wall.
Saturday, the 10th, Mark Stuart and The Bastard Sons (née the Bastard Sons Of Johnny Cash) will be holed up at the Mean Eyed Cat.
I think we can all agree that's quite a three-day stretch. Well, you ain't seen nothin' yet. Next week, for the middle of April, has a bunch of great shows that aren't to be missed.

Sunday 4/11 - Saturday 4/17
Alt-512 perennial favorite Roger Alan Wade will be playing Poodie's on Sunday 4/11, the Saxon on 4/13 and the Mean Eyed Cat on 4/14.
Monday night will feature sort-of-odd-couple Cory Branan and Mike Herrera's Tumbledown at the Mohawk.
Gruene Hall will feature three of our favorite songwriters in the round on Tuesday: Mark Jungers, Adam Carroll and Owen Temple.
Ben Kweller and the Old 97s will drop by Stubb's on Wednesday night.
Stubb's will again be busy with Charlie Robison and sister-in-law Kelly Willis on Friday the 16th.
Finally, Saturday the 17th will find Chris Knight at Gruene Hall and Danny Schmidt at a house concert in Austin.

If you need info on any of these shows, we've got the calendar right above which has more info on set times and venue addresses than I'm inclined to include here.

Three other notes:
(1) Southern Culture On The Skids starts their five-night stand at the Continental tonight at midnight.
(2) Old Settler's Music Festival starts April 15th and has an amazing lineup, as always.
(3) Junior Brown is in the midst of a series of Sunday shows at the Continental Club that seems to run on-and-off until the end of May. Check the Continental's schedule for more details.

[FairRetailRecordings] #0046 -- Phil King & Daniel Stokes -- Atlantic City

#0046

A day late. The Flatcar Rattlers have a new CD out. If you're in Austin, you should be able to get it at Waterloo. For now, here's the Rattler's singer (Daniel) and guitar player (Phil) accompanied by Cale Thibodeaux on banjo covering the Boss' Atlantic City.

Covers Of The Boss' Atlantic City

Since the first time I heard The Band's cover of Springsteen's Atlantic City, I was absolutely hooked on covers of that song. I love the song, the original from the Nebraska record, I mean, of course. But for some reason, I really love covers of this song. Unlike our list of songs that should cease to be covered, this one should be covered more.

Besides The Band, my other favorite cover of this song is by Hank III which is distinctly more (true) country than any of the other covers I've heard.

Anyway, I was out seeing Phil King and Daniel Stokes (of the Austin band Flatcar Rattlers) last night at Jovita's and they covered it. Never disappoints, this song.

Some New, Some Old

Been a slow summer here in Austin. The mercury touching triple digits every day has presumably been keeping a lot of folks away. Not much in the way of (OKOM) touring acts coming through with the exception of Scott Miller (audio of his Cactus show) a few others that we weren't able to attend.

Some of the shows we have been able to attend included the Brock Zeman (Canadiana), Flatcar Rattlers (bluegrass), Roger Alan Wade (of Jackass notoriety), Austin Homegrown (local country/blues/reggae rockers), The Memphis Strange (former Stillwater Pioneers rocking it up) and the Happen-Ins (former Dedringer Sean Faires' new group). Here's the recordings from some of their performance.

The Flatcar Rattlers: 2009.07.03 at Jovita's
The Memphis Strange: 2009.07.16 at Stubb's BBQ

Also, next Monday (August 3rd) will the latest installment of the Mean Eyed Cat Songwriter Night featuring host Lew Card, Ramsay Midwood, Jacob Jaeger and Johnny Dango. You can check out the audio from the last songwriter night at the link below.

Hey, gang. I'm going to start putting out a weekly mp3 (or possibly more frequently) of some of the live music that gets recorded in and around Austin. Some of it will be from my recordings, some of it will be from the recordings of others.

Let me know if you want off the list or want a friend added or want this sent to a different email address. By the by, gmail is now up to 7 gigs of free storage. FYI.

All that said, here's the first installment.

Slow Couple of Months, ACL Recap and Other Odd-and-Ends

Sorry there hasn't been much activity here recently but it's been a slow 6 weeks since the ACL Festival - which rocked. I'll recap my ACL Saturday briefly which for me blew the doors off any single day of ACL I've been part of: Kicked things off in the sun at the AT&T stage with the Old 97s. Caught some of the Fratellis set before moving back to AT&T for the Drive-By Truckers. Caught some chair time before Robert Earl Keen and John Fogerty at the AMD stage. Closed the night out with Beck back at the AT&T stage. I was drained at the end of all that and actually didn't attend any of Sunday's festivities.

What else has been happening? The OKOM live music scene has been a little slow in the 512 for a month now. I only saw a few/taped shows

The Martindale Chili Cookoff sucked. OK, I'm supposed to say that because the Martindale folks want to keep it small and a relative secret. In reality, it was awesome. I went down with some friends for some chili, beer (it's BYOB) and bands-o-plenty. The highlight was my introduction to the Beaumonts (think of some David Allen Coe but intentionally funny and smart). I can't wait to see them again. Anyway, there was plenty of good music from Mark Jungers and others (names escape me at the moment). Really enjoyable afternoon and evening spent in Martindale.

The lack of other activities has been a little disappointing...Not to worry. There's plenty of good stuff coming soon. The Beaumonts (will devote more time to them soon) are at the Hole In The Wall tonight (11/12). Terry Allen is at the Saxon Friday (11/14). Brock Zeman is at Gruene Hall, The Triple Crown and Riley's Tavern (Sunday 11/16, Monday 11/17 and Tuesday 11/18, respectively). And....Holy crap. The Supersuckers are at the Scoot Inn next Friday (11/21). That will rock. And then one my favorite events of the year - the Triple Crown Anniversary Party - is Sunday the 23rd.

Couple of album notes, in case I haven't mentioned them or have mentioned them and forgotten:
Waylon Forever - Skip it. Put in Waylon Live and be move along.
Peter Cooper/The Mission Door - Check it out if you like Todd Snider. I really love a bunch of the tunes on this record.
Scott Miller/Appalachian Refugee - Awesome set of demos from ASM. Buy it if you can find it.
Wow. I think that's all the stuff I've checked out lately.

Finally, I have a few bands to check out next time your on the town in Austin:
American Graveyard (myspace)
The Flatcar Rattlers (myspace)
The Beaumonts (myspace)

That's all the info I have to share. Take care. See ya down the road.
