[FairRetailRecordings] #0038 -- Scott Nolan & Joanna Miller -- No Bourbon And Bad Radio

#0038

Going to be sending out two from Scott Nolan and Joanna Miler (one today, one next Tuesday). I'm hard pressed to name a two person combination of musicians who can generate more sound than these two. Scott's usually rocking a guitar, harmonica, the vocals and a bass pedal while Joanna holds down the percussion, vocals and occasionally some keyboard. Enjoy.

Brian Keane

This cannot be the first post to mention Brian Keane. Is it? He played the first dance song at my wedding fergoodnesssakes. No, actually, it isn't. I mentioned his debut record here.

Anyway, he was gracious enough to allow a few recordings to be posted to the Live Music Archive at archive.org.

In case you don't remember, he won Song of the Year honors with Hayes Carll for their song "She Left Me For Jesus" in 2008. He's a talented songwriter. Check out his live stuff.

[FairRetailRecordings] #0036 -- Chris Wall -- In This Together

#0036

I wish Chris Wall would play more gigs. I've been fortunate enough to see him a few times over the last year and have really enjoyed some of the new songs (as yet unrecorded, I believe) that he's played. Here's one of them. Another of the new ones will be coming Tuesday.

Video of Charlie Robison Performing "Rain" @ Our House Concert

Thanks, Kirk!

[FairRetailRecordings] #0035 -- Peewee Moore & Friends -- G For Jesus Fun Time Hour

Another epic jam with lots of ins and out and what-have-yous. This time, it's 13 minutes long and it's Peewee Moore with Lew Card (mandolin), Jason Daly (acoustic guitar) and Pete The Beat (snare & high hat) kicking up the dust running through just about every bluegrass gospel standard without taking a pause. There's some audience participation towards the end around the 12 minute mark.

Enjoy. And support your local music scene.

Some Salvaged Gourds Live Recordings

I recorded the Gourds at Threadgill's on October 3rd and it was an excellent show. Sadly, the whole recording was mired by some feedback making it somewhat unusable. Luckily, some of the tracks were salvageable. You can check them out below.

Definitely don't miss Kev Russell on the mostly-a cappella versions of God's House and We're In The Same Boat Brother.

[FairRetailRecordings] #0034 -- The Gougers -- New Braunfels Homesick Blues

Yet another more-or-less defunct band closes out this week here at FRR HQ. I really enjoyed the The Gougers while they were together and here they are doing their ode to Texas and Texas music.

Artist: The Gougers

[FairRetailRecordings] #0033 -- The Dedringers -- Dedringer March

Same show, same band, next song. This is the Dedringers' ode to the last day of March and presumably Willy Wonka.

Venue: Ego's

Enjoy. And support your local music scene.

[FairRetailRecordings] #0032 -- The Dedringers -- Heart Of Gold

Here are the Dedringers performing their "Heart of Gold" (not Neil Young's) during an acoustic duo show before they started turning it up to eleven with the band and the electric guitars. And also before disbanding to move onto other projects. Incidentally, Ego's is now a karaoke bar. Lots of upheaval in this edition of FRR, I guess.

Venue: Ego's
Date: 2007.03.31
Track: Heart of Gold [File too large to attach to this email]

Some Fun Saturday Events Around Austin

Fans of chili, listen up. Martindale, Texas (southeast of Austin, east of San Marcos) is holding their fifth annual Martindale Dam Chili Cookoff on this coming Satuday the 10th. It's one of our favorite events because a) chili, b) live music from the likes of Mark Jungers and The Beaumonts and c) you can bring your own beer/liquor. Just be sure not to obey the speed limit in Martindale town limits. Chili judging is at 2p. Winners are awarded at 330p. Music runs most of the afternoon.

Saturday night, one of our favorite artists is playing a show at Evangeline Cafe in deep south Austin. Chris Wall is playing with Danny Britt and Marvin Dykuis at 10p.

We'll be there early and we hope to see you out as well.

[FairRetailRecordings] #0030 -- The Gourds -- Gin & Juice

I've long been a fan of the Gourds but somehow never really had much of an opportunity to record them (due largely to their legion of excellent tapers) until this past Saturday at Threadgill's. Here they are doing a 15-minute jam of Gin & Juice and some other classics mixed in. [File was too large to email. Right click on the track name to download.] Unfortunately, most of the recording was unusable but Gin and Juice came out in good shape.

Artist: The Gourds
Venue: Threadgills, Austin, TX

Enjoy. And support your local music scene.

[FairRetailRecordings] #0029 -- Kevin Russell -- Shiny Toof

Here's one of my favorite songs that's probably lost to the ages. I would love to see this on a Gourds record at some point and I'll leave it at that. This recording comes to us thanks to thanks to Mike Barnz, the Barbeque Warlock.

Venue: Threadgills, Austin, TX
Date: 2005.02.08
