The Best Of 2009...Live Shows In and Around ATX

2009 was a weird year. My wife and I joke about how strange (or insert your own adjective here) this year has been. As weird as it was with everything happening, the music in and around Austin was phenomenal.

I know there were more great shows we saw this year (especially SXSW) but here's the immediate list that comes to mind [links to audio of the shows provided where available].

Lew Card's Monday Songwriter Mixers @ The Mean Eyed Cat were a few of my favorites: 2009.04.06, 2009.05.04, 2009.06.01, 2009.11.02

Corb Lund @ Threadgill's South 2009.09.29 [Audio]

Here's the audio from Corb Lund's cd release show (for his new Losin' Lately Gambler record on New West Records) at Threadgill's South in Austin, Texas on Tuesday September 29, 2009. I don't know if it was because of ACL week or New West Records or the internets or the twitter or what, but there were a whole lot more people at this Corb show than I have seen in his Austin crowds (school night or weekend notwithstanding) ever. I was glad to see Corb getting the Austin recognition that talent such as his and the Hurtin' Albertans' deserves.

The boys were joined by Doug Moreland on fiddle for the last few songs and Hayes Carll on vocals for a cover of Carll's "Highway 87".

Between the crowd and the setlist, this was one of the most enjoyable shows of the year for me and a great survey of Corb's songwriting career. A bit from almost every record (except the first two) shows up here.
-Seven songs from Five Dollar Bill
-Nine songs from Hair In My Eyes Like A Highland Steer
-Four songs from Horse Soldier! Horse Soldier!
-Seven songs from Losin' Lately Gambler
-Zero songs from Modern Pain or Unforgiving Mistress

Stream the audio below or head over to the Live Music Archive and download the FLAC or MP3 files.

New Records From Corb Lund, Tom Russell & Guy Clark

[Full disclosure: I love Corb Lund's music. I love Guy Clark's music. I'd consider myself more of a casual fan of Tom Russell but there are hotspots where my love of his music burns bright.]

"I been drivin' grater, I'm a smooth operator, I wonder where all the gravel roads are"
-Corb Lund, "Long Gone To Saskatchewan"
Corb Lund's Losin' Lately Gambler is a really good record and worthy of place with the best of the rest of his catalog. Unfortunately for artists like Corb Lund, the bar is set high with brilliant records like Five Dollar Bill (his opus, imo) and Horse Soldier! Horse Soldier! under his belt. "Chinook Wind" (a little Waylon-y at the onset), "Long Gone To Saskatchewan", "Talkin' Veterinarian Blues" and "Alberta Says Hello" are my early favorites. The two others that have a sentimental place for me are "It's Hard To Keep A White Shirt Clean" (written for Willie P. Bennett) and "Devil's Best Dress" which would fit fine on Marty Robbins' Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs. As with all Corb Lund records, I give them multiple listens and they end up very high on the list when it's all said and done.

"It's a one-legged race to the liquor store"
-Tom Russell, "Mississippi River Runnin' Backwards"
Tom Russell's new record Blood and Candle Smoke starts off with "East Of Woodstock, West Of Vietnam". That song, coupled with the likes of "Nina Simone" and "Crosses Of San Carlos" yield a record that feels like some of Russell's previous work both due to the arrangement (especially with the horns) and some of the material covered. I don't mean that as a strike against this record. Blood And Candle Smoke just feels like well-worn, familiar territory that is at once new, unique and familiar. I find "Criminology" particularly intriguing because of the misdirection of the title, the history lesson contained within and the atypical arrangement (for TR). Bravo, Mr. Russell. "The Most Dangerous Woman In America" and "American Rivers" are also fascinating tunes. I like this record. It will garner a few more listens. Say what you will about Tom Russell, it's always interesting.

"'What do you want for that piece of junk' I asked the old man?"
-Guy Clark, "The Guitar"
The first two tracks of Guy Clarks "Somedays The Song Writes You" run deep with a feeling of being at the mercy of music whether you want to be or not. "The Coat", like some of the Russell tracks, sounds like familiar territory in a very good way. I found myself really enjoying this tune. For requisite Townes Van Zandt cover, Clark does a brisk version of "If I Needed You" which has long been my favorite TVZ song (so much so that we had Graham Weber play it during our wedding ceremony). Sailors and otherwise nautical fans will dig "Eamon" for sure. I enjoyed this record. Not quite as much his epics Cold Dog Soup, Dublin Blues, Guy Clark or Texas Cookin'. The first three songs on here are absolutely stunning and there's plenty of highlights on the rest of the record.

If you can spare the cash, buy these records. If you can't, pick one and you'll be pleased.

As good as these records are, they aren't quite as good as my current favorites for record of the year - Bingham's Roadhouse Sun and The Devil Makes Three's Do Wrong Right.

[FairRetailRecordings] #0024 -- Corb Lund -- The Strawberry Roan

We had the pleasure of having Corb Lund at our house almost two years ago. In advance of his new record, "Losing Lately Gambler", here's Corb, from that house concert, doing a cover of The Strawberry Roan, written by Curley Fletcher and popularized by Marty Robbins on his classic Gunfighter Ballads And Trail Songs record.

Artist: Corb Lund
Venue: Our House Concert, Austin, TX

Enjoy. And support your local music scene.

Corb Lund @ Our House Concert -- 2007.09.23

I finally got around to uploading (to youtube) the individual files from the house concert that Corb Lund played at our place back in September of 2007. Embedded below a playlist of the entire show where you can move around between songs.

If you want, the audio of the show is here on the LMA.

A Baker's Dozen Perfect Records Of The Last Ten Years

Lots of great records come out every year but so very few of them are perfect. Lots of great artists go a whole career without ever even coming close to touching the sun. Perfect means you wouldn't change the songs, the order, the arrangement, the players or anything else about the record. There's something else, something transcendent about the records on this list. After one or a dozen or a hundred listens, the record is still as fresh and brilliant and perfect as when you unwrapped it from the plastic.

Here's the list of alt512's Thirteen Perfect Records Of The Last Ten Years (1999-2008).

In no particular order other than almost alphabetical:
1 Adam Carroll -- Live At Cheatham Street Warehouse
2 Scott Miller -- Citation
3 Corb Lund -- Five Dollar Bill
4 Daddy -- At The Women's Club
5 Danny Schmidt -- Little Grey Sheep
6 Fred Eaglesmith -- Balin'
7 Guy Clark -- Cold Dog Soup
8 Mike McClure -- Twelve Pieces
9 Reckless Kelly -- Wicked Twisted Road
10 The Stillwater Pioneers -- Let's Go Pioneering
11 Verlon Thompson -- Everywhere...Yet
12 Brian Keane -- I Ain't Even Lonely
13 Deadstring Brothers -- Starving Winter Report

**The two records in bold are, as far as we can tell, the debut offerings from these artists.

Some would argue for Slaid's Broke Down or Wishbones or Bingham's Mescalito or Hayes' Flowers and Liquor or the Gourds Blood Of The Ram. Alas, great records all. Perfect...close.

Happenings This Week In the ATX

Friday (5/23) at the Continental Club Dustin Welch (myspace) kicks things off at 10p followed by the Lost Bayou Ramblers (site, myspace). Highly recommend both of these bands.
Satuday (5/24) at Threadgill's South, Corb Lund (site, myspace) brings it back to the ATX.

And of course, it's also Memorial Day weekend which means I will be hunkered down in a theater at some point catching up on the latest installment of the Indiana Jones series. I can't wait.

Gonna be a great weekend, Austin. Get out there and see some live music.

Corb Lund, Roger Marin & Romi Mayes Song Swap

This was a really enjoyable little song swap from Hayes Carll's Stingaree Music Festival last year. This song swap features Corb Lund (site, myspace), Roger Marin (site, myspace) and Romi Mayes (site, myspace). The most enjoyable thing about this set for me is seeing the early, rough versions of several of Corb Lund's tunes that ended up slightly different on his latest record, Horse Soldier! Horse Soldier!. Marin's and Mayes' tunes were also fine on this Sunday morning...

Tim Hus: Another Great Canadian Artist

This post has nothing whatsoever to do with Austin music but I thought I'd just post a little blurb here about Tim Hus (site, myspace). He's a buddy of Corb Lund (site, myspace) and some would argue that they share a certain commonality in terms of sound. They've collaborated on songwriting and each other's albums in the past but I wanted to focus on Hus' music here.

Tim Hus has three records...2002's Songs Of West Canada, 2004's Huskies And Husqvarnas and 2006's Alberta Crude. Each record has what I would consider to be relatively sparse arrangements that work perfectly with Hus' voice and compositions. After a listen to each record, I am certain they're going to get more play from me in the near future.

My current favorite tracks are "Open Pit Mine", "Dangerous Dave's Tractor Show", "Everybody Likes A Hank Williams Song", "One More Oil Boom" and "Man With A Black Hat". Speaking of a man with a black hat, written for Stompin' Tom Connors (site, myspace), Hus has a great deal of respect for Canadian cowboy luminaries Ian Tyson and Stompin' Tom.

Regardless of who Hus counts among his musical influences, there is a great presence to his music that makes the music instantly palatable and immensely enjoyable.

Also, I wanted to mention that after listening to his cds for a few weeks now, his vocals share a certain Johnny-Cash-ness with Damon Bramblett (myspace).

If you want Hus' collection, you'll have to get it from him at a show somewhere down the road or send him a check.

Corb Lund @ The Saxon Pub

Here's a nice 75 minute set from Alberta's favorite son, Corb Lund and his band the Hurtin' Albertans at Austin's Saxon Pub recently. If you haven't heard the new record, it's great and they band does a bunch of tracks from it and really does a great range of tunes covering Corb's records. Pay attention for the 'lost verse' during the version of "Horse Soldier, Horse Soldier" on this show....if you have the record (of the same name) you'll recognize the 'lost verse' as the one that fades out at the end of the song...glad to have it in all it's completeness somewhere.

Enjoy...

Corb Lund in Houston Pictures

Corb Lund Live In Our Living Room

We had the pleasure to host a house concert on Sunday September 23 with very special guest Corb Lund. The turnout was somewhat smaller that we would have liked but those who did come out where very enthusiastic and appreciative of Corb's wonderful performance.

Corb was in fine form playing several tunes that we had never heard him do live including Kris Kristofferson's "Sunday Morning Coming Down" and the traditional "The Strawberry Roan" along with a slew of tunes he doesn't normally do with the Hurtin' Albertans like "Heavy And Leaving" and "Apocalyptic Modified Blues". On top of the varied song selection, it was fantastic to hear Corb perform these songs unaccompanied. The new songs also sounded excellent acoustic.

Corb was very gracious and hung out with everyone before the show, swapping stories and beers, for a while, in between the sets and afterwards. It was a fantastic experience the whole way around.

As I mentioned in the post about the show at the Mucky Duck, the new tunes are great. I am extra excited for the new record to come out. November 13th in Canada. Mark your calendars.

Corb Lund At McGonigel's Mucky Duck

My wife and I ventured to a McGonigel's Mucky Duck in Houston to check out Corb Lund and his band the Hurtin' Albertans on Friday evening. Having never been to the Mucky Duck before I was very excited to check out this room that I had heard a whole lot about.

The Duck is a little short on space so there wasn't a lot of moving around after getting our seats, a few drinks and some snacks as a substitute for dinner. That probably sounds worse than it really is though. The sound inside the venue was fantastic. The crowd was polite and really into the whole show.

Corb and the band did two sets that infused some of the material from their new record with their great old stuff. [The new record, Horse Soldier, Horse Soldier comes out on November 13th in Canada.] We got a taste of some of those new tunes at Hayes Carll's Stingaree Music Festival in April where he played a few of them during a songswap with Roger Marin and Romi Mayes. It was great to hear those songs modified slightly and arranged for the full band presentation.

I commented to my wife that of all the bands we've paid to see over the years, Corb and the Hurtin' Albertans are the only ones who've never had a change to their lineup. That familiarity, in my humble opinion, a strong work ethic and loads of musical talent leads these guys to be one of the best 4-piece bands around, music genre not withstanding.

The highlight of the show for me was "The Hockey Song" which I had never heard performed live.
There's a new last verse to the song that comes courtesy of Mike Plume that includes mention of the hockey strike from a few years ago. It goes like this here:

Hey Ron MacLean when you save the game don't leave us hanging here
Cause those overpaid pricks with hockey sticks they make too much a year
Holy fuck just drop the puck, boys, have you got no shame
Jesus Christ, get on the ice and play the goddamn game

If they come to your town, go check 'em out. They're coming to ATX tonight and that's exactly what I'm fixin' to do. They'll be in the states for a good chunk of the next few weeks. You can check out their schedule here.

Here's the show....enjoy.
