Scott Nolan & Joanna Miller Live At Sam's Town Point 2011.03.19

Scott Nolan (site) and Joanna Miller don't come to Texas from their Winnipeg homes nearly enough. They were here for a few weeks playing shows around with Adam Carroll culminating with a show at Sam's Town Point on Saturday March 19th as part of South By Sam's Town Point. That was the first time at Sam's Town since 2007, if memory serves. The time away didn't hurt them as they rolled in and didn't disappoint playing a large selection of new tunes from Scott's new record Montgomery Eldorado.

The do a particularly blistering version of "Bad Liver And Broken Heart" as well as my new favorite Nolan comp "Silvertone."

Here's the setlist:
01 You Rock We Roll
02 Famous In Texas
03 Banter
04 Poor Man's Holiday
05 My My Hey Hey
06 Banter
07 Bad Liver And A Broken Heart
08 Banter
09 Life Could Be A Dream
10 Chrome Black And Steel
11 Montgomery Eldorado
12 Banter
13 Clay Pigeons (Blaze Foley)
14 Banter: Adam Carroll's Birthday Card
15 Silvertone
16 Banter
17 No Bourbon And Bad Radio
18 Banter
19 Sometimes

If you missed it, never fear. Archive.org link to MP3s and FLACs and stream below. Enjoy.

[FairRetailRecordings] #0038 -- Scott Nolan & Joanna Miller -- No Bourbon And Bad Radio

#0038

Going to be sending out two from Scott Nolan and Joanna Miler (one today, one next Tuesday). I'm hard pressed to name a two person combination of musicians who can generate more sound than these two. Scott's usually rocking a guitar, harmonica, the vocals and a bass pedal while Joanna holds down the percussion, vocals and occasionally some keyboard. Enjoy.

The Goings-On in The ATX This Week

Lots of great shows in the line-up this week in Austin. Check the calendar above for the full details but I'm planning hitting about 1/2 of what's on the calendar.

Here's the deal(s) for me at least:
Monday 4/7 is a day of mowing the lawn but if you like Waylon Jennings
830p @ The Saxon Pub is the Waymores (Waylon tribute band)

Tuesday 4/8 is FREE FREE FREE HAYES CARLL
5p @ Waterloo Records w/ free Shiner
8p @ Stubb's BBQ (inside), Scott Nolan is playing after Hayes (and he's definitely worth hearing)

Wednesday 4/9 I may check out Danny Scmidt
830p @ The Cactus Cafe, tickets are 7$

Thursday 4/10 is my day of rest

Friday 4/11 has plenty of options but I'm going to Flipnotics
8p Damon Bramblett @ The Dry Creek Cafe
9p Brock Zeman & Dan Walsh @ Flipnotics on Barton Springs
9p Butch Hancock @ The Cactus Cafe

Saturday night 4/12 I'm checking out the Gougers
10p @ Cheatham Street Warehouse

To borrow a quote James William Buffett, "if I don't die by Thursday, I'll be roarin' Friday night."

Scott Nolan & Joanna Miller @ Sam's Town Point

This is a fun show from Winnipeg's Scott Nolan (site, myspace) and Joanna Miller at one of the best dive's in Austin, Sam's Town Point (site, myspace). This show includes special guest Bart Willis (site) of Southside Tattoo (which isn't a band name).

A barometer a band is the ability to convert the casual listener to attentive fan. I can say with some certainty that Scott & Joanna did just that on this night. I got lots of questions from the folks at Sam's about who they were, where they were from, usually followed by 'damn, they're awesome.' And when are they coming back.

Bart is no slouch either. Enjoy this show. Support these guy by buying a record going to a show or getting a tattoo.

Mark Jungers And Friends @ Gruene Hall

Here's a nice show from Mark Jungers and the Whistling Mules from last week at Gruene Hall. There's a bunch of tracks on this show where he and the band turn on the electric guitars.

After they close the show with a rollicking cover of "Powderfinger" featuring special guest Scott Nolan, they get a few special guests to play some songs. Namely, Adam Carroll shows off two of his new tunes "Oklahoma Hustler" and "HiFi Love" before launching into a cacophonic cover of "Werewolves of London". Duncan Walters also does a pair of his own tunes before Mark rejoins the gang for a few more to close out the night.

Thoroughly enjoyable all the way around. Enjoy.
